It’s that time of year again! The Eastside Culture Crawl is back, bringing Vancouver’s vibrant arts community together for four inspiring days of creativity and connection. For 28 years, the Eastside Arts Society has been hosting this beloved event, inviting the public to explore local studios, meet talented artists, and even get hands-on with unique art forms.

Running from November 14-17, the Culture Crawl offers something for everyone, from casual art lovers to dedicated craft enthusiasts. This year, in addition to exploring studios and exhibits, you can try your hand at creating something special to take home with three exciting hands-on workshops. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store!

1. Get Inside the Stone: Hands-On Carving with Oliver Harwood 🪨

  • When: November 16-17, 11-11:30 am & 2-2:30 pm

Ever wondered what it’s like to carve stone? Local artist Oliver Harwood is ready to give you a peek into the world of stone carving. This workshop will walk you through different techniques for carving various types of stone, with an opportunity to create your very own carving. Whether you're a total beginner or an aspiring sculptor, Oliver's workshop is a rare chance to try out this ancient art form and bring a piece of it home with you. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and make something truly memorable!

2. Hand-Building Christmas Ornaments with Emina Alcantra 🎄

  • Where: 721 Gore Ave (Pot Spot Studio)
  • When: November 16, 3-4 pm & 4-5 pm

Nothing says the holiday season like handmade ornaments! Join Emina Alcantara from Noor Ceramics to craft your very own Christmas ornaments from scratch. In this hand-building workshop, you’ll learn to shape and decorate unique pieces that you can take home and proudly hang on your tree. After the workshop, optional glazing and firing are available for $30 to give your ornament a polished, professional look. Spots are first-come, first-served, so don’t miss this chance to get festive and creative!

3. Create Your Own Thaumatrope with Religatio Studio 🎭

  • Where: 780 East Cordova St (Makers lab lobby)
  • When: November 16-17, 4-5 pm

Step into the world of optical illusions and storytelling with Religatio Studio! In this whimsical workshop, you’ll learn to create your own thaumatrope—a simple but magical device that uses two images to create a moving illusion. Popular in the 19th century, thaumatropes were an early form of animation, and now you can make one yourself! Perfect for both kids and adults, this workshop will leave you with a sense of wonder and a fun creation to show off at home.
